<p id="first">ScienceDaily (June 3, 2010) —  Children with autism have a different chemical fingerprint in their  urine than non-autistic children, according to new research published  tomorrow in the print edition of the <em>Journal of Proteome Research</em>.</p>

<p>The researchers behind the study, from Imperial College London and  the University of South Australia, suggest that their findings could  ultimately lead to a simple urine test to determine whether or not a  young child has autism.</p>
<p>Autism affects an estimated one in every 100 people in the UK. People  with autism have a range of different symptoms, but they commonly  experience problems with communication and social skills, such as  understanding other people&#8217;s emotions and making conversation and eye  contact.</p>
<p>People with autism are also known to suffer from gastrointestinal  disorders and they have a different makeup of bacteria in their guts  from non-autistic people.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s research shows that it is possible to distinguish between  autistic and non-autistic children by looking at the by-products of gut  bacteria and the body&#8217;s metabolic processes in the children&#8217;s urine. The  exact biological significance of gastrointestinal disorders in the  development of autism is unknown.</p>
<p>The distinctive urinary metabolic fingerprint for autism identified  in today&#8217;s study could form the basis of a non-invasive test that might  help diagnose autism earlier. This would enable autistic children to  receive assistance, such as advanced behavioural therapy, earlier in  their development than is currently possible.</p>
<p>At present, children are assessed for autism through a lengthy  process involving a range of tests that explore the child&#8217;s social  interaction, communication and imaginative skills.</p>
<p>Early intervention can greatly improve the progress of children with  autism but it is currently difficult to establish a firm diagnosis when  children are under 18 months of age, although it is likely that changes  may occur much earlier than this.</p>
<p>The researchers suggest that their new understanding of the makeup of  bacteria in autistic children&#8217;s guts could also help scientists to  develop treatments to tackle autistic people&#8217;s gastrointestinal  problems.</p>
<p>Professor Jeremy Nicholson, the corresponding author of the study,  who is the Head of the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial  College London, said: &#8220;Autism is a condition that affects a person&#8217;s  social skills, so at first it might seem strange that there&#8217;s a  relationship between autism and what&#8217;s happening in someone&#8217;s gut.  However, your metabolism and the makeup of your gut bacteria reflect all  sorts of things, including your lifestyle and your genes. Autism  affects many different parts of a person&#8217;s system and our study shows  that you can see how it disrupts their system by looking at their  metabolism and their gut bacteria.</p>
<p>&#8220;We hope our findings might be the first step towards creating a  simple urine test to diagnose autism at a really young age, although  this is a long way off &#8212; such a test could take many years to develop  and we&#8217;re just beginning to explore the possibilities. We know that  giving therapy to children with autism when they are very young can make  a huge difference to their progress. A urine test might enable  professionals to quickly identify children with autism and help them  early on,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>The researchers are now keen to investigate whether metabolic  differences in people with autism are related to the causes of the  condition or are a consequence of its progression.</p>
<p>The researchers reached their conclusions by using H NMR Spectroscopy  to analyse the urine of three groups of children aged between 3 and 9:  39 children who had previously been diagnosed with autism, 28  non-autistic siblings of children with autism, and 34 children who did  not have autism who did not have an autistic sibling.</p>
<p>They found that each of the three groups had a distinct chemical  fingerprint. Non-autistic children with autistic siblings had a  different chemical fingerprint than those without any autistic siblings,  and autistic children had a different chemical fingerprint than the  other two groups.</p>

<p>O uso de medicações antipsicóticas para prevenir psicopatias é controverso. O óleo de peixe, substância natural rica em ômega-3, pode trazer benefícios para uma série de condições psiquiátricas, incluindo a esquizofrenia, além de não apresentar efeitos adversos clinicamente relevantes.<br />
O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar se o óleo de peixe reduz as taxas de progressão para o primeiro episódio de doença psicótica em adolescentes e adultos jovens, com idades entre 13 e 25 anos, com risco aumentado parapsicose.<br />
O estudo duplo-cego, randomizado, controlado com placebo foi conduzido entre 2004 e 2007 e publicado este mês no periódico <em>Archives of General Psychiatry</em>. Oitenta e um indivíduos com propensão para doenças psicóticas, provenientes de uma unidade de diagnóstico para doenças psiquiátricas de um hospital público em Viena, Áustria, participaram da pesquisa.</p>
<p>O estudo durou um ano, com período de intervenção de 12 semanas com uma cápsula de 1,2 gramas de óleo de peixe (rico em ômega-3) ou placebo, seguido de período de monitoramento de 40 semanas. O objetivo primário foi avaliar a progressão para a doença psicótica. O secundário foi observar as mudanças nos sintomas e nas alterações funcionais.<br />
No final do acompanhamento, 93,8% dos participantes concluíram a pesquisa. Dois de 41 indivíduos (4,9%) no grupo que recebeu ômega-3, e 11 de 40 indivíduos (27,5%) no grupo placebo apresentaram doença psicótica. O óleo de peixe também reduziu significativamente os sintomas e melhorou as alterações funcionais comparado ao placebo. A incidência de efeitos adversos não foi diferente entre os dois grupos.<br />
Os resultados mostram que o tratamento com ômega-3 reduz a progressão para doenças psicóticas e pode ser uma estratégia segura e eficaz para a prevenção dessa condição em adultos jovens predispostos.<br />
Nenhuma outra intervenção, incluindo medicamentos psiquiátricos, conseguiu tanto quanto o óleo de peixe retardar a progressão para esta patologia. O uso de medicamentos antipsicóticos tendem a ter efeitos adversos sérios, incluindo o ganho de peso e a disfunção sexual. A cápsula de óleo de peixe não apresenta efeitos colaterais importantes.<br />
Não está claro se o óleo de peixe ajuda pessoas com psicose estabelecida.<br />

<p>Partindo doprincípio de que há respostas imunes e inflamatórias envolvidas, especialmente do tipo Th2, foram experimentados medicamentos do grupo das tiazolidinedionas, que actuam sobre um receptor nuclear que modula  a sensibilidade à insulina e tem propriedades anti-inflamatórias nas células gliais.</p>
<p>Foi utilizada a pioglicazona, que é um medicamento autorizado nos EUA para o tratamento da diabetes tipo 2, em 25 crianças autistas, não Asperger.</p>
<p>Tinham outros problemas auto-imunes: 28% tinham tiroidite, 32% colite, 32% PANDAS (Doença pediátrica neurológica adquirida relacionada com estreptococo), 80% tinham doenças alérgicas e 28% tinham anticorpos séricos contra proteina básica da mielina.</p>
<p>Os pais responderam à Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) antes de iniciar o tratamento e 4 semanas depois. As 58 questões são agrupadas em 5 subscalas: hiperactividade, fala inapropriada, iirritabilidade, letargia, estereotipia.</p>
<p>Em 76% houve melhoria (mais de 50% de diminuição do score) em pelo menos uma das subscalas. 56% melhoraram em dois ou mais subgrupos e 40% mostraram melhorias em 3 ou mais.</p>
<p>Os participantes mais novos mostraram maiores melhorias que os mais velhos.</p>
<p>Depois de mais testes, isto abre portas para tratar a inflamação associada a esta e outras doenças neurológicas (Alzheimer, esclerose múltipla).</p>

<p>Verificaram que em todas as autópsias havia sinais de neuroinflamação quer no córtex, quer na substância branca, e especialmente no cerebelo.</p>
<p>O líquido cefelo-raquidiano dos autistas vivos mostrou também um perfil específico pró-inflamatório de citoquinas.</p>
<p>Isto leva os autores a concluir que as reacções neuroimunes inatas desempenham um papel patogénico numa proporção ainda não definida de autistas, sugerindo que uma linha de tratamento possa envolver a modificação das respostas da nevroglia no cérebro.</p>
<p>O estudo foi publicado nos Annais de Neurology em Janeiro de 2005</p>
<p>As recções imunes que foram encontradas são do tipo inato. Não são respostas a produtos externos, como vacinas ou alimentação.</p>
<p>Estas reacções foram encontradas em todos os autistas examinados. No entanto, devido ao seu pequeno número, não se pode tirar conclusões para todos os autistas. No entanto, faz suspeitar que sim. É necessário fazer estudos mais alargados.</p>
<p>O que foi encontrado não são vestígios de uma inflamação passada, que tivesse deixado as suas marcas. É uma inflamação crónica e mantida. Ela pode estar envolvida em mau funcionamento dos neurónios e das sinapses dos autistas.</p>
<p>A neuroinflamação observada é muito diferente da que se observa em meningites e encefalites.</p>
<p>A neuroinflamação é mais intensa no cerebelo e sobretudo nas células de Purkinje.</p>
<p>Os anti-inflamatórios não são uma solução, pois eles actuam sobretudo na imunidade adaptativa, reduzindo a produção de imunoglobulinas, diminuindo a produção de células T e limitando a infiltração de células inflamatórias nos tecidos lesados. Aqui não aparecem este tipo de reacções. estão em estudo medicamentos adaptados a esta situação, mas é preciso esperar pelos resultados.</p>

<div>Mais uma história triste. Mais um falso cientista que faz falsa ciência para fazer um favor a quem lhe paga, ou para dar um fundamento pseudocientífico a uma ideia ou causa que defende.</div>
<div>Já basta de causar sofrimento.</div>
<div>Não há relação entre autismo e esta vacina.</div>
<div>A pseudo-ciência não vem resolver os problemas dos autistas e das suas famílias. Antes os agravam, ao apontar direcções erradas, que não conduzem a nada, apenas a mais sofrimento.</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Um estudo em 62 crianças com autismo mostrou melhorias significativas nas que fizeram 40 sessões de câmara hiperbárica, com 1,3 atmosferas e 24% de oxigénio. É o primeiro estudo prospectivo, aleatório, em dupla ocultação, que se faz sobre este assunto. Os resultados são muito encorajadores. Este estudo não avalia se as melhorias se mantêm ou se é necessário continuar o tratamento.</p>
<p>Os melhores resultados foram obtidos em crianças com mais de 5 anos e nos casos menos graves.</p>

<p>O êxito deste tratamento parece estar relacionado com baixa irrigação sanguínea em certas regiões do cérebro e/ou com uma inflamação crónica cerebral, que o oxigénio hiperbárico ajudaria a tratar.</p>
<p>É uma grande esperança, pois ajuda a compreender e abre ao mesmo tempo uma linha de tratamento.</p>

<p>NEW YORK (Reuters Health) &#8211; Upon awakening, there is normally a surge in cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland and released in response to stress. Now, UK researchers report that this response is absent in adolescent boys with Asperger syndrome, which may explain some of the symptoms of the condition, such as the need for routine and resistance to change.</p>
<p>Among other functions, the ability to adapt to change is controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which controls the dramatic increase in cortisol upon awakening, referred to as &#8220;the cortisol awakening response,&#8221; the study team explains in an article in press in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.</p>
<p>&#8220;The cortisol awakening response is a robust and reproducible neuroendocrine phenomenon which has been positively correlated with psychological and physical well-being,&#8221; they add.</p>
<p>Dr. Mark Brosnan from University of Bath and colleagues say their research points to a lack of response in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in individuals with Asperger syndrome, which may help explain why these individuals have difficulties if there are minor changes in their routine or environment.</p>
<p>In the study, the investigators measured the cortisol in saliva of 20 adolescent males with Asperger syndrome and 18 age-matched controls at the time of awakening and 30 minutes later.</p>
<p>While a significant cortisol awakening response was clearly evident in the control group, this was not the case in the Asperger group.</p>
<p>&#8220;In our study, the typical marked rise in cortisol, peaking around 30 minutes after waking, was found to be of significant magnitude only in the typically developing control group. Therefore, Asperger syndrome, at least in adolescent males, appears to be characterized by an impaired cortisol awakening response,&#8221; Brosnan and colleagues write.</p>
<p>Brosnan and colleagues say further research is needed to address this &#8220;intriguing phenomenon&#8221; in Asperger syndrome.</p>

<p>O Estudo foi dirigido por Lena S. Sun, Anestesiologista e Professora na Universidade de Colúmbia, Nova York.</p>
<p>O seu objectivo era examinar os possíveis efeitos, no cérebro humano em desenvolvimento, de agentes anestésicos de uso corrente.</p>
<p>Analisaram 625 crianças que até aos 3 anos de idade foram operadas a hérnia sob anestesia geral, sem complicações.</p>
<p>Compararam com 5000 crianças sem história de exposição a anestesia geral.</p>
<p>As crianças expostas a anestesia geral tinham duas vezes maior probabilidade de desenvolver uma perturbação de desenvolvimento ou do comportamento.</p>
<p>Este estudo é ainda preliminar, vai ser aprofundado, mas não se pode ignorar.</p>
<p>A confirmar-se vem trazer mais uma prova para a importância dos factores ambientais no aparecimento das perturbações em que se inclui o autismo e o Sindrome de Asperger.</p>

<p>Na diabetes tipo 2, que é sobretudo do adulto, ou o pâncreas produz pouca insulina, ou as células não a usam adequadamente.</p>
<p>Esta diabetes tipo 2 tem vindo a aumentar muito. A OMS calcula que haja 180 milhões de diabéticos. Em 2030 haveria o dobro.</p>
<p>A explicação &#8220;oficial&#8221; para esta epidemia é que é uma doença do estilo de vida, causada por excesso de alimentação e pouco exercício físico.</p>
<p>No entanto, um epidemiologista da Universidade de Daegu, na Coreia do Sul, Duk-Hee Lee, testou esta hipótese e verificou que não era verdadeira. Para o efeito, analisou dados do estudo National Healyh and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), realizado nos Estados Unidos da América, que media o estado da diabetes além de outras coisas. Entre estas, media os níveis sanguíneos de 6 Poluentes Orgânicos Persistentes (POP).</p>
<p>Lee verificou que as pessoas que tinham níveis elevados de POP, tinham 38 vezes maior probabilidade de ter diabetes. Os obesos que não tinham níveis elevados de POP não tinham maior tendência para a diabetes. Os que tinham maior risco eram os gordos com níveis altos de POP.</p>
<p>Os POP estudados ou eram pesticidas, como o DDT ou o clordano, ou dioxinas que se formam em certos processos industriais ou na queima de lixos.</p>
<p>O aumento da diabetes estaria então ligado ao crescimento dos poluentes orgânicos persistentes.</p>
<p>Se esta interpretação se revelar correcta, temos mais uma doença que aparece como produto do meio ambiente e de poluentes que, de maneira um pouco desleixada, espalhamos por todo o lado.</p>
<p>O que torna também mais fácil de acreditar que o autismo, cuja incidência está também a aumentar, seja deviudo a causas ambientais, sobre um fundo de susceptibilidade.</p>
